Object-based texture coding of moving video in MPEG-4

چکیده
This paper describes some of the most promising segment-based coding techniques which have been investigated in the course of the MPEG-4 standardization process. Padding methods aim at extending arbitrarily shaped image segments to a regular block grid such that common hybrid block-based coding techniques can be applied. A simple and efficient padding technique employing low-pass extrapolation is outlined which yields a signal extension with high energy concentration in the low-frequency area. Simulations indicate that this method is well suited for block-based video coding, and clearly outperforms other low-complexity extrapolation methods with respect to coding efficiency. In contrast to padding techniques, shape-adaptive methods take advantage of the shape information available at the decoder side. A well-known representative of this class is the SA–DCT. However, having been primarily designed for intraframe coding, it is shown that the transform is suboptimal when applied to interframe coding. Using a suitable covariance model, it is demonstrated that a rescaled, orthonormalized transform much closer approximates the optimal shape-adaptive eigentransform of motion-compensated frame difference images. Rate distortion curves verify that orthonormalization improves coding efficiency in interframe coding by up to 2 dB while not adding to complexity. In a comparison, it is finally shown that extrapolation and SA–DCT perform very closely in the case of low data rates, while there is a clear advantage for the shape-adaptive transform in the case of high-quality video coding.

Efficient Encoding of Binary Shapes using MPEG-4
MPEG-4 Visual, that part of the upcoming MPEG-4 standard describing the coding of natural and synthetic video signals, allows the encoding of video objects using motion, texture and shape information. In this paper, the MPEG-4 context-based arithmetic encoder for encoding binary shape information is presented in the context of a new MPEG-4 video encoder architecture. The encoder architecture en...
متن کاملOperational rate-distortion optimal bit allocation between shape and texture for MPEG-4 video coding
MPEG-4 is the first multimedia standard that supports the decoupling of a video object into object shape and object texture information, which consequently brings up the optimal encoding problem for object-based video. In this paper, we present an operational rate-distortion optimal hit allocation scheme between shape and texture for MPEG-4 encoding. Our approach is based on the Lagrange multip...

The ISO MPEG committee, after successful completion of the MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 standards, has recently completed the Committee Draft for MPEG-4, its third standard. MPEG-4 is designed to be an object-based standard for multimedia coding. The visual part of the standard specifies coding of both natural and synthetic video. The MPEG-4 visual standard supports coding of natural video not only in...

Multimedia communications has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the communications industry. While the current drivers are primarily video streaming and videoconferencing, a number of new applications are on the horizon. Such applications, like multimedia libraries and interactive chat rooms, will need access to video data on an object-by-object basis, where video objects are defined...
متن کاملGeneric, scalable and efficient shape coding for visual texture objects in MPEG-4
This paper presents a generic, scalable, efficient shape coding scheme for scalable object-oriented visual texture. The base-layer coding scheme used is similar to the binary CAE coding scheme adopted in MPEG-4 video. The proposed scheme introduces a new set of generic contexts to efficiently encode (predict) enhanced shape layer based on the lower spatial layer using a context-based arithmetic...
متن کاملA New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks
The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...
